Former NBA All-Star and current NBA G League president, known for his dominant playing career and executive leadership in professional basketball.
Shareef AbdurRahim, affectionately known as "Reef," is an American former professional basketball player who has left an indelible mark on the sport. As the current president of the NBA G League, AbdurRahim's profound impact on the game is a testament to his tireless dedication and unwavering passion.
Born on December 11, 1976, in Marietta, Georgia, AbdurRahim emerged as a promising prospect at Joseph Wheeler High School. His exceptional skills on the court led him to play for the California Golden Bears during the 1995-1996 season, before entering the 1996 NBA draft.
Selected third overall by the Vancouver Grizzlies, AbdurRahim became the star of the team during his early NBA career. He played for the Grizzlies from 1996 to 2001, before being traded to the Atlanta Hawks, where he made his only NBA All-Star appearance in the 2001-2002 season.
AbdurRahim's journey continued with the Portland Trail Blazers from 2004 to 2008, and finally, with the Sacramento Kings, where he signed in 2008. Despite his impressive statistics, AbdurRahim holds the record for playing the second most games in NBA history without making a playoff appearance (744 games) until he finally made the playoffs for the first and only time in 2006.
Following his retirement from playing basketball in 2008, AbdurRahim went on to hold various leadership positions, including director of player personnel for the Sacramento Kings and general manager of the Reno Bighorns, the Kings' minor league affiliate.
In 2013, AbdurRahim was appointed as the president of the NBA G League, a role that has allowed him to shape the future of the game and nurture young talent.
AbdurRahim is the second eldest of twelve children born to Aminah and William AbdurRahim. He credits his parents for their guiding influence on him since his youth and is a devout Muslim.
