Born on October 17, 1951, in San Rafael, California, Shari Ulrich was the youngest of three children to Esther and Stanley Ulrich. Her early exposure to music was through her parents, with her mother playing the piano and her father playing the recorder. She began playing the violin at the age of nine and went on to become a multi-instrumentalist, playing the mandolin, guitar, piano, and dulcimer.
In the early 1970s, Ulrich performed on the coffeehouse circuit around Vancouver, eventually forming the folk music group Pied Pumkin with Rick Scott and Joe Mock in 1973. She later toured with Valdy as a member of The Hometown Band in 1976. After the group disbanded in 1978, Ulrich went solo, winning a Juno Award for Most Promising Female Vocalist in 1982.
Throughout her career, Ulrich has collaborated with various artists, including Bill Henderson and Roy Forbes to form the folk music group UHF in 1989. In 2009, she formed BTU (Bentall Taylor Ulrich) with Barney Bentall and Tom Taylor, releasing two albums, Live at Cates Hill and Tightrope Walk.
