Sherrod Brown was born on November 9, 1952, in Mansfield, Ohio, to Emily (née Campbell) and Charles Gailey Brown, M.D. He has Scottish, Irish, German, and English ancestry. Brown's brother Charlie served as Attorney General of West Virginia from 1985 to 1989. He became an Eagle Scout in 1967, with his badge presented by the legendary astronaut John Glenn. In 1970, Brown graduated from Mansfield Senior High School and went on to receive a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1974.
Brown began his political career in 1975 as a state representative. He served in this position until 1982, after which he became the 47th Secretary of State of Ohio from 1983 to 1991. In 1992, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, where he represented Ohio's 13th congressional district until 2007. During his time in the House, Brown was a strong advocate for labor rights, education, and healthcare reform. In 2006, he defeated incumbent Republican Mike DeWine to become the senior U.S. senator from Ohio, a position he still holds today.
