Born on August 4, 1941, in Lucasville, Ohio, Strickland was the son of Carrie Carver and Charles Orville Strickland. One of nine children, he was the first in his family to attend college, graduating from Northwest High School in 1959. Strickland went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in history with a minor in psychology from Asbury College in 1963. His academic pursuits continued with a Master of Arts degree in guidance counseling from the University of Kentucky in 1966, followed by a Master of Divinity degree from the Asbury Theological Seminary in 1967. He eventually earned his Ph.D. in counseling psychology from the University of Kentucky in 1980.
Strickland's political career began in 1993 when he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, representing Ohio's 6th congressional district. He served in this capacity until 1995 and again from 1997 to 2007. In 2006, he ran for governor, defeating incumbent Bob Taft and becoming the first Democrat to hold the office since 1991. During his tenure as governor, Strickland focused on improving education, healthcare, and economic development in Ohio. He worked to increase funding for education, expand access to healthcare, and stimulate job growth through investments in infrastructure and clean energy.
After leaving office in 2011, Strickland served as president of the Center for American Progress Action Fund, a progressive public policy research and advocacy organization. He held this position from 2014 to 2015, before announcing his candidacy for the U.S. Senate against incumbent Rob Portman. Although he lost the election, Strickland remains a vocal advocate for progressive values, continuing to champion causes that benefit the most vulnerable members of society.
Strickland is married to Frances Strickland, an educational psychologist. He has worked as a counseling psychologist at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility and was an administrator at a Methodist children's home. Prior to entering politics, he was a professor of psychology at Shawnee State University.
