In 1968, he became the executive editor of Etienne Dupuch Jr. Publications, a Nassau-based publisher of travel and educational titles. He later launched his own travel magazine, Directions, and created an annual book series and quarterly travel publication about the Cayman Islands.
In 1973, Rhoades joined Open Court Publishing in Illinois, where he launched Cricket, a literary magazine for children. He went on to oversee the launch of a British edition called Cricket Company and Encounter Magazine in London. Rhoades' experience in publishing led him to become associate publisher of Harper's Magazine during the editorship of Lewis Lapham.
In 1979, Rhoades was recruited to Charter Publishing as vice president of consumer magazines, marking the beginning of his association with Marvel Entertainment. He played a crucial role in shaping the company's publishing division, contributing to its growth and success.
