SIMON BIRD: THE MASTERMIND BEHIND THE INBETWEENERS

Straight from the get-go, Simon Bird is synonymous with Will McKenzie, the lovable, awkward, and relatable teen from the hit E4 comedy series, The Inbetweeners. But there's more to Bird than just his breakout role – this talented comedian, actor, director, and producer has had a lasting impact on the world of comedy and beyond.

EARLY LIFE AND CAREER PATH

Born on August 19, 1984, in Guildford, Surrey, Bird is the third of four children to Claremont McKenna College professors Graham and Heather Bird. He was educated at Cranmore School, West Horsley, the Royal Grammar School, Guildford, and Queens College, Cambridge, where he read English.

At Cambridge, Bird's passion for comedy began to take shape as he became the president of the Footlights, the university's renowned sketch and theatrical group. This experience laid the foundation for his future success in the world of comedy.

COMEDY CAREER

Bird's early comedy career saw him setting up the sketch comedy group The House of Windsor with fellow Footlights contemporaries Joe Thomas (who would later play Simon Cooper in The Inbetweeners) and Jonny Sweet. Together, they performed at the Edinburgh Festival in 2007 and 2008 with a show called The Meeting, a site-specific comedy installation set in an actual boardroom.

In addition to his group work, Bird also tried his hand at stand-up comedy, participating in Chortle's National Student Comedy Awards in 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008. He came close to winning in 2007, but was disqualified for deliberately breaking the rules! (Talk about a rebel with a cause!)

THE INBETWEENERS AND BREAKTHROUGH

In 2008, Bird was cast in E4's teen comedy The Inbetweeners, playing the lovable but awkward Will McKenzie. This role earned him a British Comedy Award for Best Male Newcomer in 2008 and a British Comedy Award for Best Actor in 2009. He was also nominated for Best Comedy Performance at the 2008 Royal Television Society Awards and Best Male Performance in a Comedy Programme at the 2010 BAFTA Television Awards.

It's no surprise that Bird's success in The Inbetweeners led to two spin-off films in 2011 and 2014, cementing his status as a comedy legend.

FRIDAY NIGHT DINNER AND BEYOND

In addition to The Inbetweeners, Bird also starred as Adam Goodman in the Channel 4 comedy series Friday Night Dinner from 2011 to 2020. This role showcased his impressive comedic range and solidified his position as a master of comedy.
