MacCorkindale was born on February 12, 1952, in Ely, Cambridgeshire, England, to Scottish parents Gilliver Mary (née Pendered) and Peter Bernard MacCorkindale OBE. His father's career as a Group Captain in the Royal Air Force led to a nomadic childhood, with the family moving to various locations including Edinburgh, where Simon spent a significant part of his early years.
MacCorkindale's poor eyesight prevented him from following in his father's footsteps, so he decided to pursue a career in theatre. He trained at Studio 68 of Theatre Arts in London and made his West End debut in 1974. His early roles in television included appearances in I, Claudius and Jesus of Nazareth. However, it was his role as Simon Doyle in the 1978 film Death on the Nile that catapulted him to international fame.
MacCorkindale's breakthrough role in Death on the Nile led to a string of successes in both film and television. He went on to appear in a diverse range of projects, including Quatermass (1979), The Riddle of the Sands (1979), The Sword and the Sorcerer (1982), and Jaws 3D (1983). In 1983, he starred in the short-lived but critically acclaimed series Manimal, playing the lead role of Dr. Jonathan Chase. This was followed by a long-running stint as lawyer Greg Reardon in the popular series Falcon Crest.
In the late 1980s and 1990s, MacCorkindale turned his attention to directing and producing. Through his company, Amy International Artists, he oversaw numerous stage, television, and film productions, including the critically acclaimed film Stealing Heaven (1988). He also starred in the Canadian series Counterstrike as Peter Sinclair for three years.
In 2002, MacCorkindale returned to the UK and joined the cast of the BBC medical drama Casualty, playing the role of Harry Harper for six years until 2008. This period marked a new chapter in his career, as he continued to act, direct, and produce a range of projects.
