Born on 24 September 1936, Sivanthi Adithan was the second son of S. P. Adithanar, a renowned lawyer, minister, and founder of Daily Thanthi. He had his schooling at Ramakrishna Higher Secondary School and Besant Theosophical High School, and later pursued his Bachelor's degree at Presidency College. During his college days, he was an active NCC Cadet and served as the NCC Commander, showcasing his leadership skills from a young age.
Despite being the son of the founder, Sivanthi Adithan began his career as an ordinary worker in Daily Thanthi, gradually climbing the ranks to become the editor. When his father handed over the reins to him in 1959, Daily Thanthi was printed in just three cities. Under his visionary leadership, the newspaper expanded its reach to 15 cities across the country, becoming the most-read Tamil daily.
Sivanthi Adithan was a devoted philanthropist who funded the renovation of numerous temples and constructed sports infrastructure, including a state-of-the-art indoor volleyball stadium in Adithanar College, Tiruchendur. He also renovated the 178-feet Rajagopuram of Arulmigu Kasivishvanathar Temple in Tenkasi, which was damaged 200 years ago.
Sivanthi Adithan was honored with the Padma Shri, one of India's highest civilian awards, for his outstanding contributions to the field of journalism and philanthropy. He also served as the President of the Indian Olympic Association from 1987 to 1996, further solidifying his reputation as a stalwart in Indian sports.
