A legendary Greek singer and guitarist renowned for his powerful, emotive voice and iconic laika songs that captivated audiences for decades. His music remains a staple of Greek culture.
Stelios Kazantzidis is revered as one of the most prominent Greek singers of all time, leaving an indelible mark on the landscape of Greek popular music. With a career spanning over four decades, he collaborated with some of Greece's most renowned composers, producing timeless classics that continue to echo in the hearts of music lovers.
Born on 29 August 1931, in Nea Ionia, Athens, Greece, Kazantzidis was the first of two brothers to Haralambos Kazantzidis of Pontian roots and Gesthimani Kazantzidi, who hailed from Alanya, Turkey. His early life was marked by tragedy when his father, a member of the Greek Resistance, was brutally murdered by right-wing guerillas in 1947, during the Greek Civil War, leaving him orphaned at just 13 years old.
Forced to fend for himself, Kazantzidis worked menial jobs to make ends meet, until the owner of a factory in Perissos gifted him a guitar. This serendipitous act changed the course of his life, as he spent countless hours mastering the instrument. His first public appearance in a Kifissia night club in the early 1950s marked the beginning of his musical journey.
In July 1952, Kazantzidis made his first studio recording at Columbia studios with the song "I'm going for a swim", written by Apostolos Kaldaras. Although it didn't garner much attention, he persevered, and his subsequent recording of Giannis Papaioannou's "The suitcases" became his first hit. This breakthrough led to performances in prominent clubs, such as Theios, Mpertzeletos, and Rosignol, cementing his position in the Greek music scene.
Kazantzidis went on to collaborate with the crème de la crème of Greek music, including Manolis Chiotis, Mikis Theodorakis, and Giorgos Zambetas, among others. His iconic voice and unique style earned him a reputation as a master of Laika, a genre of Greek popular music.
