Steve Gadd is widely regarded as one of the most prolific and respected session drummers in the music industry, with a career spanning over five decades. He's the mastermind behind some of the most iconic tracks in music history, including Paul Simon's "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover" and Steely Dan's "Aja."
Gadd was born on April 9, 1945, in Irondequoit, New York. He started playing the drums at a very young age and was one of the winners of the Mickey Mouse National Talent Round Up contest at just 11 years old. This led to a trip to California, where he met Walt Disney and appeared on The Mickey Mouse Club, showcasing his drumming and tap dancing skills.
After graduating from Eastridge High School, Gadd attended the Eastman School of Music, graduating in 1968. He was then drafted into the United States Army, where he served for three years, playing drums in the United States Army Field Band stationed at Ft. Meade, MD.
In 1968, Gadd made his first studio recording on Gap Mangione's album "Diana in the Autumn Wind." This marked the beginning of his illustrious career as a session drummer. In 1973, he formed the short-lived jazz fusion band L'Image, alongside Mike Mainieri, Warren Bernhardt, David Spinozza, and Tony Levin.
That same year, Gadd started playing on numerous albums for the jazz label CTI Records, backing artists like Milt Jackson, Chet Baker, Art Farmer, Jim Hall, and Hubert Laws. His work on these albums showcased his incredible skill and versatility as a drummer.
Gadd's performance on Steely Dan's "Aja" in 1977 is widely considered one of the greatest drumming performances in rock history. The track's legendary drum solo, featuring Gadd's explosive tomtom runs and crisp cymbal grooves, has been hailed as a masterpiece.
Other notable recordings from the 1970s include Van McCoy's hit "The Hustle" and songs with Paul Simon, James Taylor, Chick Corea, Chuck Mangione, Eric Clapton, and Michel Petrucciani.
