Mason grew up in Oakville, Ontario, where he developed a passion for hockey at a young age. He played mostly A hockey until his Bantam year, when he moved up to the AAA level with the Oakville Rangers of the OMHA's South Central AAA League.
In 2004, he was drafted by the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) in the 11th round of the OHL Priority Selection. Mason's junior career was marked by significant milestones, including leading the Grimsby Peach Kings club to the OHA Jr.C. title in 2004-05 and playing for the Petrolia Jets Jr.B. club in 2005-06.
