Stiv Bators was a renowned American punk rock vocalist and guitarist, best known as the frontman of the influential bands Dead Boys and The Lords of the New Church. With his rebellious attitude, energetic stage presence, and unique vocal style, Bators left an indelible mark on the punk rock movement of the 1970s and 1980s.
Born Steven John Bator on October 22, 1949, in Youngstown, Ohio, Stiv Bators grew up in a Catholic family of Pennsylvania Dutch and Czech-Romani descent. After attending Catholic school for 12 years, Bators began his musical journey, forming his first band, Hormones, with Dennis Comeau and Andre Siva.
In the mid-1970s, Bators co-founded Dead Boys, a punk rock band based in Cleveland, Ohio. With his raw, snarling vocals and irreverent stage antics, Bators helped pioneer the punk rock sound and aesthetic. Dead Boys quickly became a staple at the legendary CBGB music club in New York City's East Village, and their music was featured in several punk rock films, including Punking Out, Live at CBGBs, and Crash n Burn.
After Dead Boys disbanded in 1979, Bators embarked on a solo career, releasing several singles and an LP, Disconnected, in 1980. He also formed The Wanderers with Dave Tregunna, the bass player for Sham 69, and later formed The Lords of the New Church, a punk rock supergroup featuring members of The Damned and The Dead Boys.
Stiv Bators' influence on punk rock and alternative music is still felt today. His energetic live performances, distinctive vocal style, and rebellious attitude have inspired countless musicians, including The Clash, The Ramones, and Green Day. Bators' music also blurred the lines between punk, glam, and pop, paving the way for future generations of musicians.
Stiv Bators' influence extends beyond music to film and fashion. He has been name-checked by artists such as The White Stripes, The Black Keys, and The Hives, and has appeared in films like Punking Out and Urgh! A Music War.
Stiv Bators may have left us too soon, but his punk rock spirit, rebellious attitude, and unforgettable music continue to inspire and influence new generations of musicians and fans alike.
