Horton-Tucker was born and raised on the Northside of Chicago, Illinois, where he attended St. Matthias Elementary School and had his No. 5 jersey retired. He then went on to play high school basketball at Simeon Career Academy, where he helped the Wolverines win three consecutive City Championships.
Horton-Tucker played college basketball for the Iowa State Cyclones, where he averaged 11.8 points, 4.9 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 1.3 steals in 27 minutes per game as a freshman. On November 20, 2018, he scored a career-high 26 points and grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds in a win against Illinois. After his impressive freshman season, Horton-Tucker declared for the 2019 NBA draft and was selected as the 46th overall pick by the Orlando Magic, before being traded to the Los Angeles Lakers on draft night.
Horton-Tucker signed with the Los Angeles Lakers on July 13, 2019, and was assigned to the South Bay Lakers, the team's NBA G League affiliate, for the opening of the G League season. He made his NBA debut on December 8, 2019, against the Minnesota Timberwolves and went on to receive a larger role during the NBA Bubble as the Lakers clinched the best record in the Western Conference. On September 12, 2020, Horton-Tucker scored 9 points in 10 minutes off the bench in the regular season finale.
