An Olympic gold medalist and World Cup champion, known for his dominance in giant slalom and innovative skiing technique.
Known for his dominance on the slopes, Ted Ligety is a two-time Olympic gold medalist and a five-time World Cup champion in giant slalom. With a career spanning over two decades, Ligety has etched his name in the annals of alpine ski racing history, earning the reputation as one of the greatest giant slalom skiers of all time.
Born on August 31, 1984, in Salt Lake City, Utah, Ligety grew up in Park City and began skiing at the tender age of two. He started racing at ten and attended The Winter Sports School, graduating in 2002. Ligety's natural talent and dedication earned him a spot on the U.S. Skiing Development Team, where he won a silver medal in slalom at the Junior World Championships in 2004.
Ligety made his first start in a World Cup event during the 2004 World Cup season in the giant slalom at Park City. In the summer of 2004, he and U.S. Ski Team head coach Sasha Rearick studied Fu Style Tai Chi, which helped him develop a unique skiing style. The next winter, Ligety was added to the U.S. Ski Team full-time, during which he had four top-15 finishes in slalom, placing 24th overall in the discipline.
Ligety's breakout moment came at the 2006 Olympics in Turin, where he won the combined event. He repeated his Olympic success at the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, winning the giant slalom race. In addition to his Olympic medals, Ligety won the gold medal in the giant slalom at the 2011 World Championships and successfully defended his world title in 2013 in Schladming, Austria.
Ligety is a five-time World Cup champion in giant slalom (2008, 2010, 2011, 2013, and 2014). He finished his career with 25 victories (24 in giant slalom and 1 in super combined) and 52 podiums in World Cup competition. His impressive record has earned him a spot among the three greatest giant slalom skiers of all time, according to SkiDB.
In early 2021, Ligety announced his retirement from ski racing due to an injury, which prompted him to withdraw from the 2021 World Championships in Cortina d'Ampezzo. Despite his premature retirement, Ligety's legacy continues to inspire a new generation of skiers. He co-founded Shred Optics, a company that manufactures goggles and sunglasses for active lifestyles.
Ted Ligety's remarkable career is a testament to his dedication, perseverance, and passion for alpine ski racing. His impressive achievements have cemented his place as one of the greatest skiers in history, and his legacy will continue to inspire and motivate athletes for generations to come.
