Lead vocalist and guitarist of the influential British indie rock band The House of Love, known for their dreamy, swirling soundscapes and poetic lyrics.
Terry Bickers, born on September 6, 1965, in Kensington, London, is an English musician and songwriter, renowned for his work as the original lead guitarist with The House of Love from 1986 to 1989 and again from 2004 to 2020. He is also recognized for his stint as the frontman-guitarist for Levitation and Cradle, earning him a reputation as one of Britain's leading young guitarists in the late 1980s and 1990s.
Bickers grew up in Fulham, London, in a family of gamblers and card players, where he learned valuable life skills from a young age. However, his life took a drastic turn when his parents split up when he was just 12 years old, an event that would later influence his personal vulnerability and reactions to people and band politics.
In 1986, Bickers joined The House of Love, playing a pivotal role as lead guitarist and creative foil to singer and songwriter Guy Chadwick. The band's unique sound and Bickers' virtuosity on the guitar quickly gained them critical acclaim, with their debut album The House of Love (1988) and the follow-up Butterfly (1990) cementing their place in the British indie rock scene.
After leaving The House of Love in 1989, Bickers went on to form Levitation, an experimental rock band that pushed the boundaries of psychedelic music. He also worked with Cradle, a project that showcased his versatility as a musician. Throughout the 1990s, Bickers continued to make waves in the music industry, earning a reputation for his innovative approach to guitar playing and songwriting.
In 2014, Bickers collaborated with singer-songwriter Pete Fijalkowski, resulting in the album Broken Heart Surgery. He currently resides in Brighton, England, where he teaches music at Access To Music college, sharing his expertise with the next generation of musicians.
Terry Bickers' contribution to British indie rock cannot be overstated. His work with The House of Love, Levitation, and Cradle has inspired countless musicians, and his influence can still be felt in the music of today. As a guitarist, songwriter, and teacher, Bickers continues to leave an indelible mark on the music industry.
