Born on December 28, 1958, in Singapore, where his father was commissioned with the Royal Navy, Butcher spent most of his childhood in Lowestoft, Suffolk. He attended Lowestoft Grammar School and turned down the chance to join the Norwich City youth team, opting instead for East Anglian rivals Ipswich Town.
Butcher joined Ipswich Town in August 1976 after a three-week trial and made his debut for the club against Everton in the First Division in 1978. Over the next eight seasons, he established himself as the club's top central defender, known for his leadership, aerial ability, and courage.
