Born on April 7, 1957, Walker attended Marple Hall Grammar School in Manchester, England. She graduated in 1978 with a Bachelor's degree in Education from Manchester Polytechnic, now Manchester Metropolitan University. Her teaching career spanned 34 years, with 12 years in Stockport and later in Kirklees, West Yorkshire. Walker's experience as a headteacher of Overthorpe C of E School and Flockton C of E First School prepared her for her future role in politics.
In the 2017 general election, Walker was elected as the MP for Colne Valley with a majority of 915 votes, defeating Conservative Party politician Jason McCartney. She made her maiden speech on June 27, 2017, and went on to serve on the Education Select Committee from September 2017 to November 2019. Walker also sat on the Welsh Affairs Select Committee between January and February 2018. During her time in parliament, she was a Parliamentary Private Secretary to Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer John McDonnell.
Walker was a strong advocate for quality education, particularly in her role on the Education Select Committee. She supported the Labour Against Private Schools campaign, which aims to abolish private schools in the UK.
