Tim Peake, a name synonymous with space exploration, is a retired British European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut, Army Air Corps officer, and author. He made history by becoming the first British ESA astronaut, the second to bear the UK flag patch, and the sixth person born in the UK to venture into the International Space Station (ISS).
Born on April 7, 1972, in Chichester, Sussex, Peake grew up in Westbourne, West Sussex. He attended Chichester High School for Boys, graduating in 1990. Peake then enrolled at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, where he began his military career.
Commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Army Air Corps in 1992, Peake served as a platoon commander with the Royal Green Jackets. He was promoted to lieutenant in 1994 and transferred to a regular commission in 1997. As a qualified helicopter pilot and instructor, Peake accumulated over 3,000 flying hours and graduated from the Empire Test Pilots School in Wiltshire in 2005.
In 2009, Peake left the army to join the ESA, embarking on an intensive astronaut basic training course. He graduated on November 22, 2010, and was assigned to the ISS for Expedition 46/47. Peake's six-month mission, from December 2015 to June 2016, made him the seventh UK-born person in space.
During his time on the ISS, Peake conducted numerous scientific experiments, spacewalks, and educational outreach programs. He also ran the London Marathon from space, covering 26.2 miles on the treadmill to raise money for the Prince's Trust.
