Born on January 10, 1993, in Landshut, Germany, Rieder's passion for hockey started at a young age. He began his junior career with the Landshut Cannibals in the German Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL) before moving to North America to play for the Kitchener Rangers in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL).
In 2011, Rieder was selected by the Edmonton Oilers in the fourth round (114th overall) of the NHL Entry Draft. Two years later, his playing rights were traded to the Phoenix Coyotes in exchange for Kale Kessy. He was traded to the Los Angeles Kings in 2018, along with goaltender Scott Wedgewood, in exchange for goaltender Darcy Kuemper. Rieder has also played for the Edmonton Oilers, Calgary Flames, and Buffalo Sabres throughout his NHL career.
