Born on January 11, 1946, in Leicester, England, Kaye grew up in a working-class family in north London, surrounded by music. His grandmother, a concert pianist, and his grandfather, a jazz saxophonist, instilled in him a deep appreciation for music from a young age.
Kaye began formal piano lessons at the age of four, under the guidance of Ms. Flanagan, who became a significant influence on his musical and philosophical development. By the time he was eight, he could recite several classical music pieces, and by twelve, he was performing in solo and duet piano concerts.
In 1968, Kaye co-founded Yes, along with Chris Squire, Peter Banks, Bill Bruford, and Jon Anderson. During his initial stint with the band, Kaye played on their first three albums, Yes, Time and a Word, and The Yes Album. His keyboard skills and signature sound contributed significantly to the band's early success.
After leaving Yes in 1971, Kaye formed Badger and relocated to Los Angeles in 1974. He then embarked on a tour with David Bowie and joined the band Detective. In the late 1970s, he played with Badfinger and featured on their final studio album in 1981.
In 1983, Kaye returned to Yes, remaining with the band until 1994. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, he collaborated with Billy Sherwood on various projects, including CIRCA. From 2009 to 2011, the two were also members of the supergroup Yoso, featuring members of Toto.
In 2017, Kaye was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Yes, solidifying his place in the annals of rock history.
