Australian rules footballer and V8 Supercar driver who competed in both sports simultaneously, earning recognition for his unique dual-sport career.
Troy Wilson is a name synonymous with speedway driving and Australian rules football. Born on January 19, 1962, Wilson's impressive career has seen him make a significant impact in both sports, earning him a reputation as a formidable competitor.
Despite attempting to break into professional football at an earlier age, Wilson's shin splints prevented him from doing so. Instead, he played amateur football with Nollamara until West Perth gave him a chance at the age of 24.
Wilson made his debut for West Perth in 1986, playing as a defender and later showcasing his prowess as a full-forward. His aggressive playing style earned him a reputation, and his attacks on the ball from full-forward led to medical treatment for many of his opponents.
In 1994, Wilson won a premiership with West Perth, and in 2000, he crossed to arch-rivals East Perth, playing as a full-forward and helping the side end a 22-year premiership drought.
In 2000, Wilson was picked up by the West Coast Eagles in the preseason draft at the age of 28, an unheard-of feat in modern times. Despite the Eagles finishing fourteenth on the AFL ladder, Wilson had a solid debut season, playing 18 games and kicking 40 goals to become the club's leading goalkicker.
In 2002, Wilson began the season in strong form but was hampered by injuries, including a collarbone injury, calf, and hamstring problems. He managed to kick five goals in Round 22, helping the Eagles scrape a place in the finals.
In 2003, Wilson played only five AFL games and was subsequently delisted. Upon his return to the WAFL in 2004, he won the F.D. Book Medal as East Perth's fairest and best player and was also the club's leading goalkicker.
After retiring from Australian rules football, Wilson turned his attention to speedway driving, where he has continued to make a name for himself as a formidable competitor.
Troy Wilson's impressive career is a testament to his determination and perseverance. From overcoming shin splints to become a successful Australian rules footballer to making a name for himself in the world of speedway driving, Wilson is an inspiration to many.
