He later enrolled at the University of East Anglia, studying Development Studies between 1977 and 1980.
Tupou VI's military career began in 1982, when he joined the naval arm of the Tonga Defence Services. He quickly rose through the ranks, achieving the rank of Lieutenant-Commander by 1987. His military service included commanding the Pacific-class patrol boat VOEA Pangai from 1990 to 1995, during which he participated in peacekeeping operations in Bougainville. His academic pursuits continued, as he graduated from the US Naval War College in 1988 and earned two master's degrees, one in Defence Studies from the University of New South Wales (1997) and another in International Relations from Bond University (1999).
In 1998, Tupou VI transitioned from his military career to government service, assuming dual roles as Defence Minister and Foreign Minister until August 2004. He later became Prime Minister on January 3, 2000, and served in that capacity until 2006. During his tenure, he was officially confirmed by his brother as the heir presumptive to the Throne of Tonga.
Upon the death of King George Tupou V on March 18, 2012, Tupou VI became the King of Tonga, taking on the regnal name Tupou VI. His coronation ceremony took place on July 4, 2015, marking the beginning of a new era for Tonga.
