Born on May 2, 1953, in Moscow, Russia, Gergiev's love affair with music began at an early age. His parents, Tamara Timofeevna Tatarkanovna Lagkueva and Abisal Zaurbekovich Gergiev, both of Ossetian origin, instilled in him a deep appreciation for the arts. Growing up in Vladikavkaz, North Ossetia, Gergiev's first piano lessons in secondary school paved the way for his future as a maestro. He went on to study at the Leningrad Conservatory from 1972 to 1977, under the tutelage of Ilya Musin, a renowned Russian conductor.
Gergiev's big break came in 1978, when he became the assistant conductor at the Kirov Opera (now the Mariinsky Opera) under Yuri Temirkanov. His debut performance, conducting Sergei Prokofiev's War and Peace, marked the beginning of a lifelong association with the Mariinsky Theatre. In 1981, he took the reins as chief conductor of the Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra, a position he held until 1985. His meteoric rise continued, as he became chief conductor and artistic director of the Mariinsky Theatre in 1988, and overall director of the company in 1996, appointed by the Russian government.
