Born Viktor Jnos on April 22, 1891, in San Giorgio Canavese, Piedmont, Italy, to Hungarian immigrant parents, Jano's fascination with mechanics and engineering began at an early age. He started his career at Societ Torinese Automobili Rapid, where he honed his skills under the guidance of G.B. Ceirano.

Rise to Prominence with Alfa Romeo

In 1923, Jano joined Alfa Romeo, where he replaced Giuseppe Merosi as chief engineer. His first design, the Alfa Romeo P2 Grand Prix car, won the inaugural World Championship for Grand Prix cars in 1925. This triumph catapulted Jano to fame and established Alfa Romeo as a force to be reckoned with in motorsport.

Iconic Designs and Innovations

• The Alfa Romeo P3 model, designed in 1932, went on to achieve great success with Enzo Ferrari and his Scuderia Ferrari in 1933.
• Jano developed a series of small-to-medium-displacement 4, 6, and 8-cylinder inline power plants, which became the hallmark of Alfa engines.
• The Alfa Romeo 12C, designed in 1936, featured a V12 engine, a precursor to the iconic powerplants that would come to define Italian sports cars.

Lancia and Ferrari Years

In 1937, Jano moved to Lancia, where he designed the Grand Prix effort, including the Lancia D50. Although the car was introduced in 1954, a series of setbacks, including the loss of Alberto Ascari and the 1955 Le Mans disaster, led to Lancia's withdrawal from GP racing. Ferrari took over the effort, and Jano joined the team in 1955.

At Ferrari, Jano's impact was significant. He began work on a new V12 engine to replace the existing inline-4 engined sports cars. The Jano V12 engine made its debut in the Ferrari 290 MM in 1956, marking a new era in Ferrari's history.
