Born on June 15, 1978, in Helmond, North Brabant, Bouma began his footballing journey at amateur club SV RoodWit '62. In 1994, he joined PSV Eindhoven on a youth contract, marking the beginning of his professional career.
Bouma's breakthrough came when he scored seven goals in 18 games while on loan at MVV in 1996. The following season, he netted 16 goals in 33 games, helping his team secure promotion to the Eredivisie. His impressive performances earned him a recall to the PSV squad, where he became an integral part of the team.
