Will Downing, the renowned American R&B, soul, neo-soul, and jazz singer-songwriter, has been mesmerizing audiences with his velvety smooth voice and captivating stage presence for over three decades. With a staggering 22 studio albums under his belt, Downing has cemented his status as a legendary figure in the music industry.
Born on November 29, 1963, in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, New York, Downing grew up in a working-class family with a strong musical inclination. His father, a skycap at a local airport, and his mother, a schoolteacher, encouraged his early interest in music. As a teenager, Downing was an active member of his school choir and even sang demos for publishing houses, earning $50 each.
After attending Erasmus Hall High School in Brooklyn, Downing pursued a music career, much to the dismay of his parents, who had envisioned a more traditional profession for their son. Undeterred, Downing moved back to New York City and began his professional journey as a vocalist for a house music group in 1983. He then went on to work as a backing vocalist for renowned artists such as Jennifer Holliday, Kool & the Gang, and Regina Belle.
In 1988, Downing signed with 4th & B'way Records and released his debut solo album, Will Downing, which featured a cover of John Coltrane's "A Love Supreme." The album's success was followed by Come Together as One in 1989, released on Island Records. However, it was his third album, A Dream Fulfilled, released in 1991, that brought him his first commercial success, featuring his rendition of Angela Bofill's "I Try."
Downing's subsequent albums, including Loves the Place to Be (1993), Moods (1995), and Invitation Only (1997), solidified his position as a master of soul and jazz. His album All the Man You Need, released on Motown Records, earned him a Grammy Award nomination.
Throughout his illustrious career, Downing has been praised for his smooth, sultry voice, and his ability to blend genres seamlessly. He has influenced a generation of artists and continues to inspire new talent. With his extensive discography and numerous collaborations, Will Downing remains a beloved figure in the music industry, revered for his contributions to soul, jazz, and R&B.
Downing has been open about his experiences with health issues, including his struggles with polymyositis, a chronic autoimmune disorder. Despite these challenges, he remains committed to his music and philanthropic efforts, supporting various charitable organizations, including the American Diabetes Association and the American Heart Association.
