Born on April 28, 1827, in Horton, Nova Scotia, William Edward Hall was the son of Jacob and Lucy Hall, former American slaves who had escaped to freedom in Nova Scotia with the help of the British Royal Navy. Hall's early life was marked by hard work and determination, as he began working in shipyards at Hantsport, Nova Scotia, before setting sail as a teenager on merchant ships based out of the Minas Basin.

The Call to Duty

In 1847, Hall briefly served in the United States Navy during the Mexican-American War, aboard the USS Ohio. However, it was during his tenure in the Royal Navy, which he joined in 1852, that Hall truly made his mark. He served on several ships, including HMS Rodney, where he fought in the Crimean War, and later on HMS Shannon, where he became captain of the foretop.

The Siege of Lucknow and the Victoria Cross

It was during the Indian Mutiny in 1857 that Hall's heroism came to the forefront. As part of the naval gun crew on HMS Shannon, Hall, along with an officer, continued to load and fire a 24-pounder gun at the walls of the Shah Nujeef mosque, despite being under heavy fire and witnessing the rest of their party being killed or injured. This fearless act of devotion to duty earned Hall the Victoria Cross, Britain's highest military honor.
