Zhang's journey to the pinnacle of chess success began in 1998, when he became China's 9th Grandmaster. His success in the Corus B tournament earned him a spot in the prestigious Corus A tournament the following year, where he scored 5.5/13. Zhang's victory in the 2005 Asian Chess Championship also qualified him for the FIDE World Cup, where he defeated Mikhail Kobalia in the first round, only to be defeated by Ivan Sokolov in the second.
In 2007, Zhang made a significant decision to transfer national federations and represent Singapore. One of his notable achievements during this period was winning the ASEAN Chess Circuit Tournament in Tarakan in 2008.
In 2017, Zhang returned to the Chinese federation, and his competitive spirit remained unabated. He tied for 1st-3rd place with Nguyn Ngc Trng Sn and L Quang Lim at the 4th HDBank Cup in Ho Chi Minh City in 2014, ultimately finishing second on tiebreak. Later that year, he won the 11th IGB Dato' Arthur Tan Malaysia Open in Kuala Lumpur.
