Born on January 3, 1947, in Tampa, Florida, Zulema attended Howard W. Blake High School, where she cultivated her passion for music. Her early musical endeavors included joining local groups such as The 5 Crystals and The Lovelles, alongside fellow Tampa native Albert Bailey and friend Brenda Hilliard.

When The Lovelles met producer Van McCoy, they were signed by Maxwell Records and later changed their name to Faith, Hope and Charity. The group's song "So Much Love" reached No. 15 on the R&B chart and No. 60 on the pop chart in 1970. Zulema's vocal contributions to the group played a significant role in their early success.

Solo Career and Collaborations

In 1971, Zulema left Faith, Hope and Charity and embarked on a solo career. Her self-titled debut album featured the song "American Fruit, African Roots" and a cover of "If This World Were Mine." The album showcased her soulful voice and genre-bending style, which blended disco, R&B, and funk elements.

As a solo artist, Zulema toured as an opening act for prominent stars like Bill Withers and Roberta Flack. She also appeared on the bill alongside Marvin Gaye, Gladys Knight & the Pips, Earth, Wind & Fire, and Sly Stone at the Push Expo in Chicago, a concert that was later adapted into the motion picture "Save the Children." The movie's soundtrack, released on Motown Records, featured Zulema's single "This Child of Mine," a powerful anthem that showcased her vocal range and emotional depth.

Zulema's subsequent albums, including "Ms. Z" produced by Bobby Taylor, and "R.S.V.P." and "Suddenly There Was You" on RCA Records, solidified her position as a respected solo artist. She also contributed to the soundtrack of the 1974 film "Honeybaby, Honeybaby," providing the track "I Just Can't Say Goodbye."
