On Christmas Eve, 1983, the Russian-built Antonov An-24 turboprop airliner, registration CCCP-46378, struggled to lift off from Leshukonskoye Airport's icy runway. The plane careened out of control, crashing mere meters from the airfield's boundary, instantly killing 44 of the 49 people on board. Only five survivors stumbled out of the wreckage, battered and shaken, into the subzero temperatures.
