Alexander Berry: The Scottish Surgeon Who Founded a Settlement in Australia

A Pioneer in Exploration and Settlement

Alexander Berry is renowned for being the Scottish-born surgeon, merchant, and explorer who established the first European settlement on the south coast of New South Wales, Australia, in 1822. This settlement, known as the Coolangatta Estate, would eventually develop into the town of Berry, named in honor of Alexander and his brother David.

Early Life and Education

Born on November 30, 1781, in Hilltarvit Mains farmhouse, near Cupar in Fife, Scotland, Alexander Berry was the son of James Berry and Isabel Tod. He was baptized on December 6, 1781. Berry was one of nine siblings and was educated at Cupar grammar school, where he was a contemporary of the artist Sir David Wilkie. He pursued his medical studies at St Andrews University from 1796 to 1798 and the University of Edinburgh from 1798 to 1801.

Medical Career and Merchant Ventures

Berry's initial intention was to join the navy, but his father dissuaded him from doing so. Instead, he became a surgeon's mate for the East India Company. This role allowed him to take a substantial amount of cargo, making him responsible for both medical and mercantile duties. Berry traveled to China and India aboard the Lord Hawkesbury, where his second voyage proved to be profitable. However, he decided to quit the medical profession due to his dislike of attending whippings and was drawn to the commercial possibilities of shipping.

The Journey to Australia

Berry's third voyage took him to the Cape of Good Hope in 1806. Upon arrival, he learned that New South Wales needed provisions. He purchased a ship, City of Edinburgh, with medical student Francis Shortt, to transport provisions to the colony. While traveling as supercargo, he encountered storms that damaged his ship, prompting him to stop in Tasmania at Port Dalrymple, close to modern-day Launceston. Berry sold half of his provisions there.

Establishing the Coolangatta Estate

In 1822, Berry was granted 10,000 acres of land and 100 convicts to establish a settlement on the south coast of New South Wales, Australia. This settlement, known as the Coolangatta Estate, would become a thriving agricultural and commercial hub. Berry's entrepreneurial spirit and medical background made him an ideal candidate to establish and manage the settlement.
