He quickly established himself as a skilled brewer, becoming the manager of a local brewery, which he eventually bought out in 1820.
In 1822, Keith moved his brewery to larger facilities, paving the way for his business to flourish. He introduced a range of innovative beverages, including spruce beer, porter, ginger wine, and strong ale, capitalizing on the decline of rum production in the British and French Caribbean. This strategic expansion enabled Keith's brewery to thrive, ultimately becoming a staple in the region.

He served as a member of the Halifax city council in 1841 and was elected mayor in 1843, 1853, and 1854. At the time of his death on December 14, 1873, Keith's estate was valued at $251,000, a staggering amount for the era. He was buried at Camp Hill Cemetery in Halifax, Nova Scotia, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire generations of brewers and entrepreneurs.
