A Labour Party politician who served as a Member of Parliament and later as a life peer in the House of Lords, known for her work on various parliamentary committees and advocacy for social justice.
Angela Smith, Baroness Smith of Basildon, is a British politician and life peer who has been a stalwart figure in the House of Lords since 2010. As the Leader of the Opposition in the House of Lords since 2015, she has been a vocal advocate for Labour Party values and a champion of social justice.
Born on January 7, 1959, Angela Smith grew up in Basildon, Essex. She attended Pitsea Junior School and Chalvedon Comprehensive, later known as Chalvedon School. After completing her secondary education, she went on to study Public Administration at Leicester Polytechnic, graduating with a BA degree.
Before entering politics, Smith worked as a trainee accountant with the London Borough of Newham from 1982 to 1983. She then joined the League Against Cruel Sports, where she rose through the ranks to become the head of Political and Public Relations, a position she held from 1983 to 1995. During this period, she also served as a member of Essex County Council from 1989 and a member of the Fire Authority for the County of Essex. In 1995, she became a political researcher, a role that prepared her for her future parliamentary career.
Smith's foray into politics began when she contested the Southend West constituency in the 1987 general election. Although she lost, she continued to work towards her goal of becoming an MP. In 1995, she was selected to stand for election in Basildon, and in 1997, she won the seat, replacing Conservative MP David Amess. She served as MP for Basildon from 1997 to 2010, during which time she held various positions, including Assistant Whip from 2001 to 2002, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State from 2002 to 2007, and Minister of State for the Third Sector in 2009.
In 2010, Smith lost her seat to the Conservatives, but her political career was far from over. She was appointed to the House of Lords in 2010 and has since served as Shadow Deputy Chief Whip from 2012 to 2015 and Shadow Leader of the House of Lords since 2015.
In 1978, Smith married Nigel Smith, a historian who has written several history books for Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 students. Together, they have built a life filled with public service and a commitment to social justice.
Throughout her career, Angela Smith has been a champion of Labour Party values, advocating for policies that benefit the most vulnerable members of society. As Leader of the Opposition in the House of Lords, she has continued to be a vocal advocate for social justice, human rights, and equality. Her dedication to public service has earned her a reputation as a pillar of British politics, and her legacy will continue to inspire future generations of politicians and social activists.
