A young Italian girl who refused to renounce her faith and was brutally murdered at the age of 15, now revered as a symbol of courage and devotion.
Antonia Mesina, a 15-year-old Italian Catholic, is known for her unwavering bravery and devotion to her faith, which ultimately led to her tragic death in 1935. She was brutally murdered by a would-be rapist, Giovanni Ignazio Catigu, after she attempted to fend him off, and subsequently became a martyr for the Catholic Church.
Born on June 21, 1919, to a poor policeman, Agostino Mesina, and Grazia Rubanu, Antonia was the second of ten children. She was baptized in the local parish church of Saint Peter and received her Confirmation at the age of 11. Mesina took over household responsibilities at a young age to assist her bedridden mother, who suffered from a heart condition.
In 1929, she joined the Catholic Action movement, where she became an active recruiter and developed a strong passion for spreading the Catholic faith. Mesina believed that the movement helped individuals become better versions of themselves.
On a fateful morning in mid-1935, Mesina set out to gather firewood with a friend after attending Mass. It was here that she encountered Catigu, who attempted to rape her. Her friend screamed and ran off to find help, but Mesina fought back, refusing to give in to Catigu's advances.
Despite being knocked down, Mesina managed to escape twice, only to be struck with a rock by Catigu on her third attempt. The autopsy revealed a shocking 74 wounds, but no signs of rape. Catigu was soon apprehended, sentenced to death, and executed by firing squad on August 5, 1937.
On October 5, 1935, Armida Barelli, a Catholic Action member who had met Mesina, informed Pope Pius XI about her activism and tragic death. This marked the beginning of Mesina's journey towards sainthood.
The beatification process commenced in the Diocese of Nuoro on April 17, 1979, and concluded on March 11, 1985. Pope John Paul II approved the beatification of Antonia Mesina in 1987, solidifying her position as a martyr for the Catholic Church.
Antonia Mesina's unwavering faith and bravery in the face of terror serve as a powerful inspiration to many. Her story is a testament to the importance of standing up against injustice and protecting one's dignity, even in the face of death.
Her legacy continues to inspire young Catholics around the world, serving as a reminder of the importance of living a virtuous life and standing up for what is right, even in the face of adversity.
