Valdés began his musical journey in the 1940s, performing in Havana's nightclubs as a pianist. He replaced René Hernández as pianist and arranger in Julio Cuevas' band, recording the hit single "Rareza del siglo" in 1946, one of his most famous mambos. From 1948 to 1957, he worked as pianist and arranger for the vedette Rita Montaner, the lead act at the legendary Tropicana cabaret.
In 1952, Valdés premiered his innovative rhythm, batanga, at the Tropicana, aiming to compete with Pérez Prado's mambo. Although batanga couldn't surpass the popularity of chachachá, it remains a testament to Valdés' groundbreaking creativity.
After the Cuban Revolution in 1960, Valdés left his family behind and went into exile in Mexico, eventually settling in Sweden, where he remarried. His musical career lay dormant until 1994, when a collaboration with Paquito D'Rivera brought him back into the spotlight.
