Dutch literary figure and TV personality, celebrated for his poetic works and charismatic on-screen presence, leaving a lasting impact on Netherlands' cultural scene.
Boudewijn Bch was a renowned Dutch writer, poet, and television presenter, known for his captivating travelogues and eclectic literary works. With a career spanning over three decades, Bch enthralled audiences with his unique perspective on the world, its people, and its wonders.
Born on December 14, 1948, in The Hague, Netherlands, Bch grew up in a Catholic family in Wassenaar. His father was a civil servant, and his parents divorced in 1963. Bch had five brothers, including Menno Buch, who would later follow in his footsteps as a television presenter.
Bch was known to have fabricated various aspects of his life, a phenomenon known as pseudologia fantastica. One of the most notable examples of this was his claim to have fathered a child who had passed away at the age of six. However, the child in question was not his, and did not die. This fabrication formed the basis of his successful novel, De kleine blonde dood (The Small Blond Death).
One of Bch's most popular television programs was De wereld van Boudewijn Bch (The World of Boudewijn Bch), which aired from summer 1988 to autumn 2001. The program took viewers on a journey across the globe, showcasing Bch's unique perspective on various places, people, and phenomena.
Bch was an avid bibliophile, with a vast collection of over 100,000 books. His interests spanned various subjects, including biology, Goethe, and explorers. He was particularly fascinated by islands, especially those that were hard to visit, such as Bouvet Island near Antarctica. This fascination led him to write five non-fiction books on the subject, commonly known as the Islands series.
Bch passed away on November 23, 2002, at the age of 53, due to a cardiac arrest. He left behind a legacy of captivating literature, television programs, and a treasure trove of knowledge. His mother, five brothers, and twelve nieces and nephews survived him.
"The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page." - Boudewijn Bch
This quote encapsulates Bch's love for travel, exploration, and the pursuit of knowledge, which was evident throughout his literary and television career.
