Marsalis's early life was filled with music. He attended Eleanor McMain Secondary Magnet School, where he played in a R&B cover band called The Creators. He later studied at Southern University, a historically black college in Baton Rouge, under the guidance of renowned jazz clarinetist Alvin Batiste. Batiste's encouragement led Marsalis to transfer to Berklee College of Music in Boston.
While at Berklee, Marsalis toured Europe with drummer Art Blakey's large ensemble, playing alto and tenor saxophone. He also performed with Lionel Hampton and Clark Terry, further honing his skills.
