He studied at Christchurch College in Kurunegala, Holy Family Convent in Anuradhapura, and later joined Royal College, Colombo, at the age of 11. He then joined Ceylon Law College, qualifying as a proctor and an advocate. During his time at the law college, he served as the president of the Law Students Union in 1962.
