A legendary drummer and songwriter, best known for his work with Vanilla Fudge and Rod Stewart, as well as co-writing hits like "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy".
Carmine Appice is an American rock drummer, best known for his iconic work with Vanilla Fudge, Cactus, and Beck, Bogert & Appice. With a career spanning over five decades, Appice has left an indelible mark on the world of rock music, earning him a spot in the Classic Drummer Hall of Fame and the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame.
Born on December 15, 1946, in Brooklyn, New York, Appice received classical music training from a young age. He drew inspiration from jazz drummers Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa, whose influences can be heard in his unique playing style.
Appice's breakthrough came in the late 1960s as the drummer for the psychedelic band Vanilla Fudge. Alongside bassist Tim Bogert, he contributed distinctive background harmonies, which became a hallmark of the band's sound. The duo left Vanilla Fudge to form the blues-rock quartet Cactus, featuring vocalist Rusty Day and guitarist Jim McCarty.
Appice and Bogert then joined forces with Jeff Beck to form the power trio Beck, Bogert & Appice. The band's fusion of blues, rock, and fusion cemented Appice's reputation as a versatile and innovative drummer. In the late 1970s, he joined Rod Stewart's backing band, co-writing hits like "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy" and "Young Turks."
Throughout his career, Appice has collaborated with a diverse range of artists, including Paul Stanley, Stanley Clarke, Ted Nugent, and Pink Floyd. He has also played with KGB, featuring Ray Kennedy, Ric Grech, Mike Bloomfield, and Barry Goldberg. In the 1980s, he formed King Kobra and later joined John Sykes in Blue Murder.
Appice's instructional book, The Realistic Rock Drum Method, has been a staple for aspiring drummers since its publication in 1972. The book covers essential topics such as rock rhythms, polyrhythms, and bass drum exercises. Appice has claimed to have influenced John Bonham's use of bass drum triplets, solidifying his impact on rock drumming.
Carmine Appice's contributions to rock music have left a lasting legacy, cementing his place as one of the most influential drummers in rock history.
