Francisco de Assis França was born on March 13, 1966, in the Rio Doce neighborhood of Olinda, Pernambuco, in Brazil's Northeast Region. Growing up, he would sell crabs he caught himself in the city's mangrove swamps, an experience that would later influence his music. Influenced by legendary musicians such as James Brown, Grandmaster Flash, and Kurtis Blow, Chico Science's unique sound was shaped by a blend of rock, funk, and hip hop with traditional maracatu rhythms.
Around 1991, Chico Science, along with singer Fred 04 of the band Mundo Livre S/A, founded the Mangue Bit cultural movement as a response to the dire economic and cultural stagnation in Recife and Olinda. This movement aimed to revitalize the region's cultural identity and provide a platform for artists to express themselves freely. CSNZ's music became the soundtrack for this revolution, with their debut album, Da Lama Ao Caos (From Mud to Chaos), released in 1994.
In 1995, Chico Science & Nacao Zumbi made their US debut at New York's Central Park Summerstage, opening for Gilberto Gil.
