Born on August 5, 1956, as a twin, Chessun was educated at Hampton School, an all-boys private school in London. He pursued his degree in modern history at University College, Oxford, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in 1978. As per tradition, his BA was promoted to a Master of Arts (MA Oxon) degree in 1982.
Chessun's ordained ministry began when he was made a deacon at Petertide on July 3, 1983, by Conrad Meyer, Bishop of Dorchester, at Dorchester Abbey. He was later ordained a priest on July 1, 1984, by Patrick Rodger, Bishop of Oxford, at Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford.
He served curacies at St Michael and All Angels, Sandhurst, and St Mary's, Portsea. Subsequently, he became a chaplain at St Paul's Cathedral, London, and later, rector of St Dunstan's, Stepney. He also held the position of Archdeacon of Northolt from 2001 to 2005.
In 2005, Chessun was appointed Bishop of Woolwich, an area bishop of the Diocese of Southwark. He was consecrated a bishop on April 21, 2005. After serving as an area bishop for over five years, his appointment as Bishop of Southwark was confirmed on January 17, 2011, and he began his public ministry as the 10th Bishop of Southwark in March 2011.
