Born on November 28, 1978, Flahavan began his footballing journey at Southampton, where he honed his skills as a young goalkeeper. Although he didn't make a first-team appearance for the Saints, he went on to make a name for himself with Conference side Woking.
In 2000, Flahavan signed with Southend United, where he had two successful spells and made a staggering 356 appearances for the club. His impressive performance helped Southend rise from League Two to the Championship in back-to-back seasons.
Flahavan's exceptional goalkeeping skills earned him several awards and recognitions. He won the PFA League One Player of the Year and was named in the League One Team of the Year in 2005-06. He was also awarded the Southend United Supporters' Player of the Year in 2002-03 and the Players' Player of the Year in 2003-04 and again in 2005-06.
One of Flahavan's most memorable performances was against Manchester United in the League Cup on November 7, 2006. He put in a man-of-the-match display, making a string of saves from Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney, helping Southend win the game 1-0.
