Dimitris Sgouros, a Greek classical pianist, has been widely acclaimed for his exceptional musical talent, which he showcased from a very young age. Born on August 30, 1969, Sgouros is regarded as one of the world's leading concert pianists, with the legendary Arthur Rubinstein praising him as the best player he had ever heard.
Sgouros was born to Sotirios and Marianthi Sgouros, and despite no notable record of musical talent in his family, he began playing the piano at the age of six. A year later, he gave his first public performance, and at eight, he entered the Athens Conservatoire, studying under Maria Herogiorgiou-Sigara.
Between 1978 and 1983, Sgouros won several competitions, including the UNICEF competition in Bulgaria, a competition in Ancona, Italy, and two competitions in Athens. He was also the recipient of the 1982 Leonardo da Vinci International Award. At the age of 12, Sgouros made his Carnegie Hall debut, performing Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3 with the National Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Mstislav Rostropovich.
In mid-1983, before turning 13, Sgouros graduated from the conservatory with a professor's diploma, teacher's diploma, first prize, and a gold medal. He continued his studies at the Royal Academy of Music in London and the University of Maryland, College Park, in the United States, graduating from the Royal Academy with the highest marks the institution had ever awarded.
Sgouros has performed in numerous concerts around the world, including in Australia, Austria, Bulgaria, China, Cyprus, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Romania, Russia, South Africa, Spain, and Turkey.
Throughout his illustrious career, Sgouros has received numerous awards and honors, including the 1982 Leonardo da Vinci International Award and the highest marks from the Royal Academy of Music.
Sgouros is an Aromanian, having declared, "I am Vlach with a capital V." Besides his musical talents, he has undertaken postgraduate studies in mathematics at the University of Oxford.
