After his army service, he returned to Yale, graduating in 1951. Irwin was an accomplished athlete, playing rugby, soccer, and swimming for the school team. He also taught Spanish at Yale while a student there.

Irwin graduated from Yale Law School in 1954 and was admitted to the bar, commencing the practice of law in Connecticut. He married Mary Stapleton on August 23, 1952, and together they had four children: Patrick, Marion, Lucy, and Stephen.

A Career in Politics

Irwin's political career began as a member of the Norwalk Board of Education. He was elected as a Democrat to the 86th Congress, serving from January 3, 1959, to January 3, 1961. During this time, he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention from Connecticut in 1960. Although he was unsuccessful in his bid for reelection in 1960, Irwin continued to serve his country, appointed as general counsel to the United States Information Agency in 1961.

In 1962, he was appointed treasurer of the State of Connecticut by Governor John N. Dempsey, serving until 1963. Irwin returned to Congress, elected to the 89th and 90th Congresses, serving from January 3, 1965, to January 3, 1969. After an unsuccessful campaign for reelection in 1968, Irwin resumed the practice of law.
