Snyders was born on November 11, 1579, in Antwerp, Belgium, to Jan Snijders, the proprietor of a wine inn frequented by artists, and Maria Gijsbrechts. His artistic inclination was nurtured from an early age, with his father's inn being a hub for artistic talent.
Snyders' artistic journey began with an apprenticeship under Pieter Brueghel the Younger in 1593, followed by training with Hendrick van Balen, the first master of Anthony van Dyck. In 1602, he became a master of the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke, solidifying his position as a prominent artist.
In 1608-1609, Snyders traveled to Italy, where he resided in Rome and later in Milan, upon the introduction of Jan Brueghel the Elder to the esteemed art collector Cardinal Borromeo. This experience not only broadened his artistic horizons but also led to collaborations with prominent painters, including Peter Paul Rubens, Anthony van Dyck, Jacob Jordaens, and Abraham Janssens.
Upon his return to Antwerp in 1609, Snyders married Margaretha, the sister of Cornelis de Vos and Paul de Vos, two leading painters in the city. His collaboration with Rubens commenced in the 1610s, resulting in numerous works that showcased their artistic synergy.
