She graduated from Eastern District High School in 1914 and worked clerical jobs for 14 years to support her family.
In 1921, Blanch became an American citizen, and after her mother's death in 1927, she started taking evening classes at Washington Square College, part of New York University. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics with a minor in Physics from New York University in 1932, graduating with summa cum laude and becoming a member of the prestigious academic honor society, Phi Beta Kappa.

She wrote her thesis, "Properties of the Veneroni Transformation in S4," and received her Ph.D. from Cornell University in algebraic geometry in 1935.
