Born on September 25, 1947, in Nicosia, Cyprus, Giannos was the son of Nikos Kranidiotis, a renowned Cypriot diplomat, poet, and writer. He pursued his studies in law at the University of Athens and later advanced his knowledge in international relations through postgraduate studies at Harvard and Sussex University.
Kranidiotis's political career began in 1976 when he joined the Panhellenic Socialist Party (PASOK). He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming an advisor on the Cyprus dispute to Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou from 1981 to 1984. His extensive experience in international relations led to his appointment as secretary of European affairs from 1984 to 1989 and later as deputy foreign minister from July 8, 1994, to January 1995.
One of his most significant accomplishments was his election as a Member of the European Parliament from 1995 to 1997. This tenure showcased his dedication to strengthening Greece's ties with the European Union and promoting regional cooperation.

Tragically, Giannos Kranidiotis's life was cut short in a plane crash on September 14, 1999, while en route to a six-nation Balkan foreign ministers' regional cooperation meeting in Bucharest, Romania. He was accompanied by his son, Nikolas, and four other passengers who also lost their lives in the accident.
