After attending York College in 1966-1967, he formed the short-lived cover band The Crystal Ship with Al Whiteside and Dave Speece in the summer of 1967.

In the early 1970s, Branca studied theater at Emerson College in Boston, where he began experimenting with sound. In 1973, he moved to London with his then-girlfriend Meg English, and later returned to Boston in 1974, where he met John Rehberger. This marked the beginning of his journey in experimental music and theater. Branca founded the experimental theater group Bastard Theatre in 1975, where he wrote and produced the music-theater piece Anthropophagoi, featuring original compositions performed live by actor-musicians.

In 1976, Branca moved to New York City, where he encountered the N. Dodo Band and became acquainted with one of its members, Jeffrey Lohn. This encounter led him to explore the city's vibrant music scene, eventually giving rise to the no wave movement. Branca's music during this period was characterized by its use of dissonance, noise, and repetition, which resonated with the city's avant-garde community.
