Born on September 22, 1918, in Warsaw, Poland, to a wealthy Jewish family, Szeryng's musical journey began at the tender age of five, when he started piano and harmony lessons with his mother. Two years later, he transitioned to the violin, receiving instruction from Maurice Frenkel. This early exposure to music laid the foundation for his future success.
When World War II broke out, Szeryng put his music career on hold to serve as a liaison officer and interpreter for the Polish government in exile, alongside Premier Władysław Sikorski. During this period, he continued to perform for Allied troops, giving over 300 concerts worldwide.
In 1941, while accompanying Sikorski on a mission to Mexico, Szeryng was deeply moved by the warm reception he received. This experience inspired him to become a Mexican naturalized citizen in 1946. In 1945, he accepted an offer to head the string department of the National University of Mexico, a position he held for many years.
In 1954, Szeryng met pianist Arthur Rubinstein, a fellow Jewish refugee from Poland, backstage after a concert in Mexico City. Rubinstein, impressed by Szeryng's talent, invited him to play at his hotel, and their impromptu performance of Bach's solo violin music led to a lifelong friendship.
Szeryng received numerous awards and accolades for his contributions to music, including the Grand Prix du Disque, the Edison Prize, and the Mexican government's highest honor, the Order of the Aztec Eagle.
