Born on April 17, 1888, in Germany, Niel's fascination with music began at a young age. After completing his apprenticeship with choirmaster Adolf Bchner in 1902, he joined the Imperial German Army in 1906 as a trombonist and oboist in the 1st Infantry Regiment of the Guard in Potsdam. During World War I, he served as the bandmaster of the 423rd German Infantry Regiment.
In 1919, Niel was demobilized and worked as an official in the administration until 1927. It was during this period that he co-founded the Ritterschaftsorchester (Knights Orchestra) in Potsdam, where he composed and wrote lyrics for numerous marches and songs. His music gained popularity, and he became a prominent figure in the world of military music.
In 1933, Niel joined the Nazi Party, becoming a member of the Sturmabteilung (SA) and eventually rising to the position of band leader of the Reichsarbeitsdienst (RAD) training establishment in Potsdam. During this period, he composed numerous marches and songs that were widely distributed and popularized by the NSDAP. His involvement with the Nazi Party has sparked controversy, with many criticizing his role in promoting the regime's ideology through his music.
Niel's contributions to military music are undeniable. He invented and designed the "Herms Niel-Doppelfanfare," a fanfare trumpet in E and B-flat, manufactured by Ernst Hess Nachf. in 1938. He also conducted the RAD music bands at the Nazi party rallies in Nuremberg.
